Case study

Amazon Seller Data: 51K B2B Leads with Business Name and Address

The client builds B2B lead lists. This time the target was companies that sell on Amazon in the United States and Canada, and the source was Amazon itself: every seller profile shows the business name and business address behind the store, and some also list a customer service phone. The brief was a one-time file of such sellers, one row per company.

The project started small, with a list of seller IDs the client already had, and grew into a search for sellers by the client's product criteria.

Amazon Seller Data: 51K B2B Leads with Business Name and Address

What an Amazon seller profile gives a lead list

The client sent a sample of the columns it wanted, and the file follows it: seller URL, store name, rating, customer service phone, business name and up to five business address lines. Two rules keep the columns usable for every seller.

  • Rating. A seller page can show four ratings. The file takes the 12-month rating, as in the client's sample; where a seller has none, it falls back to the all-time rating, then 3 months, then 1 month.
  • Address. Most addresses fit five lines. Where a page has more, the extra parts are added to the last line rather than dropped, so every element of the address is in the file.

Column names and values were brought to one form: ratings as plain numbers, phones as text without a plus sign, so no spreadsheet turns a phone number into an exponent.

From the client's seller IDs to an Amazon-wide search

The client's list of 6,086 seller IDs arrived one night. The finished file went out the next morning, in CSV and, at the client's request, in XLSX. An updated file with phones for the sellers that list one followed.

Then the client widened the brief. Instead of supplying IDs, it asked us to find the products ourselves: listed on Amazon US, 5 or more reviews, priced from $12, with the criteria kept loose. From those products we were to take the sellers and their contact details. The client's own estimate: 100,000 products would give about 40,000 sellers, and about 10,000 of them would have US addresses.

Most Amazon sellers are not North American

The share of US and Canadian sellers decided how far the search had to go. In an early file, about 2,400 of 8,400 sellers had a US or Canadian address. In the next one, 2,222 of 9,405, or 23%. At 28,550 unique sellers, 8,650 were in the US or Canada.

To raise that share, we added Amazon.ca to the search, on the expectation that Canadian listings show more North American sellers. The same seller turns up on many products, so each one is kept once in the file however often it appears. In the final file, sellers with an address in China make up 34,923 rows, so the total had to pass the client's 40,000 estimate to reach its US target.

What the client has now

The client received the final file: 51,216 Amazon sellers, each in one row, all with a business name and a business address. 12,813 have a US address and 553 a Canadian one, 13,366 in total against the 10,000 the client expected. A customer service phone is filled for 5,046 sellers, 3,413 of them in the US; on amazon.com most sellers do not list one. Ratings are filled for 48,823.

From request to final file took four weeks, and the first data for the client's own seller list arrived in under two days.
