Case study

bol.com Seller Data: 72,961 Sellers with KvK, VAT and Address

The client works with sellers on bol.com directly: its team contacts them one by one. For that it needed the other side of the marketplace, not products but the companies behind the shops. The brief was a one-time list of every seller on bol.com with company name, business address and a link to the shop, so the team could choose whom to approach and know which company it was dealing with.

The files arrived 18 days after the request.

bol.com Seller Data: 72,961 Sellers with KvK, VAT and Address

bol.com has no list of its sellers

A shopper meets a bol.com seller only through its offers and its shop page. There is no directory of sellers to download or page through, and no count of how many there are. So the list itself was the main part of the job: before any field could be read, every live seller shop had to be found.

That is also why the result is one file of all sellers found, not a selection by category or by product. A seller with a single offer counts as much as one with thousands: each shop is one row.

What a bol.com seller page holds

Each shop page carries a block of company details in Dutch. Four of them made the core of the file, renamed into English columns so they could go straight into the client's own records:

  • handelsnaam, the trade name, as full_name;
  • vestigingsadres, the business address, as address;
  • KvK-nummer, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce number, as kvk_number;
  • btw-nummer, the VAT number, as vat_number.

Next to them sit the shop name, the organization name, the shop link and the date each page was collected, plus the seller rating and review count where the shop has them: 40,173 shops do. Shops whose page showed no company details were left out, so a row in the file is always a company the client can identify.

The brief also asked for email. bol.com shows no seller email anywhere on the site, and the client confirmed that names and addresses were enough for its purpose.

KvK for Dutch sellers, VAT for almost all

The two registration numbers do not cover the same set of sellers. The VAT number is filled in 72,949 rows. The KvK number is filled in 63,611, which matches the number of shops with a Dutch address: the Chamber of Commerce is a Dutch register, so a Belgian seller has a VAT number but no KvK.

The KvK number also shows where one company runs several shops. The 63,611 rows with a KvK number carry 55,170 distinct numbers, so for the Dutch part of the file the client can group shops by company and contact each business once, not once per storefront.

Eighteen days from request to bol.com seller files

The company details were split into separate columns, so that no field arrived as a nested block inside a spreadsheet cell. The client received the final set in two formats: XLSX for working in a spreadsheet and JSONL for loading into its own systems. From the first message to the files took 18 days.

What the client has now

The client now has the seller side of bol.com in one file: 72,961 shops, almost all with trade name, business address and VAT number, 63,611 with a KvK number, and a link back to each shop. Sellers registered in the Netherlands and in Belgium share one layout, and the registration numbers tie each shop to a company rather than to a storefront name.
