carsales scraper for Australian car listings and prices

Our carsales scraper keeps the price type beside every price: one figure can be Drive away or Excl. Govt. Charges, and it can come from a dealer or a private seller.

How we scrape carsales for you

You order data, not software. Give us the scope - all cars for sale, one state, a list of makes and models, dealer stock only, private ads only, electric cars - and the cadence. We build the crawlers for carsales.com.au, run them and keep them working as the site changes.

The site screens its visitors with an anti-bot service and is built for an Australian audience, so Australian proxy rotation, pacing, browser rendering and CAPTCHA solving come with the service. Rows are keyed on the carsales Network ID, the code that ends every listing address, so an ad is recognised in each run even when its title or price has changed. Delivery is CSV, Excel, JSON or JSONLines by SFTP, Amazon S3, Google Drive or e-mail, through our API, or as a load into your database - once, weekly, daily or on demand. The project assessment is free.

carsales data: what each listing row holds

A listing on carsales has three layers: what the seller typed, what the site adds from RedBook specification data, and what the site calculates itself. We keep them apart, because they answer different questions.

  • Identity - Network ID (OAG-AD plus a number on dealer used cars, SSE-AD on private ads, SHRM-AD on new cars to order), listing URL, title with year, make, model, badge and transmission, and the dealer stock ID on dealer ads.
  • Price - the amount in Australian dollars and its type, Drive away or Excl. Govt. Charges. Where a dealer quotes drive away, the card also prints the figure excluding estimated government charges; both are captured. New cars to order carry a third type, Indicative drive away.
  • Price indicator - the tag carsales generates by comparing the price with comparable listings on the site: Great Price, Good Price or Fair Price, or empty when no tag is shown.
  • Seller - dealer or private, the category on the card such as Dealer used, state and suburb; for dealers also name, address, dealer licence number, phone and the count of current ads.
  • Vehicle - odometer in km, body type with doors and seats, transmission, engine, fuel, exterior and interior colour, series, badge and model year.
  • Compliance - build date, compliance date, registration expiry where the ad gives it, ANCAP safety rating, combined fuel consumption, and probationary plate status state by state.
  • Specifications - the grouped sheet: engine, transmission and drivetrain, dimensions and weights, towing capacity, warranty and service intervals, country of origin.
  • Content - seller or dealer comments, features by group, photo and video counts, image addresses.

Private sellers' names and phone numbers are personal data and are left out by default; the car, its price and its location stay.

carsales price history, sold listings and dealer stock

carsales price history, sold listings and dealer stock

The site shows the present. Most projects need the sequence.

  • Price change history. An ad displays its current price only. Runs on a schedule store each price with a date against the Network ID, so every car gets a record of its changes and of the days it has been advertised.
  • Sold and old listings. Ads vanish when the car sells or the seller withdraws it, and the site shows asking prices, not sold prices. Old listings stay in your dataset with their last advertised price and last-seen date - the closest public figure to a sale price, and the only way to work with sold listings at all.
  • Indicator drift. The price indicator is recalculated as comparable listings come and go, so it can change while the asking price stands still. Captured on every run, it shows the day a car moved from Fair Price to Good Price or lost its tag.
  • Dealer stock. Every dealer ad names the dealer, and the dealer block counts the ads currently live. Grouped by dealer, the rows become stock lists, mix by make and price band, and turnover per yard.
  • Search structure. Filters map into the address - make, model, state, colour, fuel type, lifestyle - and include Price guide, ANCAP safety rating and P-plate approved state. We split the market along them to reach every ad, then merge on the Network ID.

The same group runs bikesales, boatsales, trucksales and caravancampingsales; each can be scoped as a further source in the same project.

About carsales.com.au

carsales is an Australian car classifieds site: dealers and private sellers advertise new, demo and used cars, and buyers search them by make, model, state and a long list of technical filters. Its Buy menu already shows how the stock is cut - all cars, new cars, used cars, dealer cars, private seller cars, electric cars - and each of those is a slice a dataset can follow separately.

Three things set it apart for anyone who needs its data. Prices carry a declared type, Drive away or Excl. Govt. Charges, so two identical numbers are not always the same offer. Specifications are not left to the seller: they are sourced from RedBook, which belongs to the same group, and that gives every ad one vocabulary of series, badge, build date and compliance date. And the site grades prices itself, with a price indicator tag the seller can neither buy nor alter.

Listings are national in reach and local in practice: each shows its state, and dealer ads show the yard's address and licence. Around the classifieds sit editorial and owner reviews, a showroom of new models and a valuation tool. The company also operates marketplaces for bikes, boats, trucks, caravans, construction equipment and farm machinery.

What a carsales dataset answers

Australia is a right-hand-drive market with its own model names, badges and compliance rules, so price data from overseas does not transfer. The listings on carsales are public evidence of local asking prices that can be counted.

  • Used car valuation. Asking prices by make, model, badge, build year and odometer band give a market curve, and the split between the two price types keeps it honest.
  • Dealer benchmarking. A dealer group compares its stock and pricing with rival yards in the same state, ad by ad, and sees which of its cars carry a Great Price or Good Price tag and which carry none.
  • Dealer against private. The same car advertised by both kinds of seller shows the retail margin the market accepts.
  • Time to sell. The dates an ad first appeared and was last seen give days on market by segment and state, a figure lenders and fleet remarketers plan around.
  • Supply signals. Counts of new, demo and used cars by fuel show how fast electric and hybrid stock is building and in which states.
  • Origin and age research. Build date, compliance date and country of origin show where and when a car was made and how long it took to reach Australian roads.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Used In Web Scraping

Leveraging advances in technology, the AI-powered web scraper has skyrocketed in demand and is helping to expand capabilities by automating tedious daily tasks and speeding up data collection from thousands of websites several times over.

What is Web Scraping and What is it Used For?

What is Web Scraping and What is it Used For?

Web scraping is a method of obtaining web data by extracting it from pages of web resources with the help of a program, that is, in automatic mode. It is used to syntactically convert web pages into more usable forms.

About ScrapeIt

ScrapeIt is a web scraping agency: clients describe the data they need, and the building, running and upkeep of the crawlers is our side of the work. Plans start from EUR 169 a month, or EUR 199 for a one-time extract.

Classifieds with two kinds of sellers, like carsales, need a clear line, and ours does not move: dealers are businesses, and their names, addresses and phone numbers are collected; private sellers are people, and theirs stay out. Personal data is handled under GDPR, we never log in, and we do not sell contact lists.

FAQ

Do you cover both dealer and private carsales listings?

Yes, and the two are never mixed up: every row says dealer or private, with the category printed on the card. Dealer rows add the dealer's name, address, licence number and stock ID. Private rows keep the car, price, state and suburb, without the seller's name or phone number.

Can you run a carsales price tracker on a list of models?

Yes. Send the makes, models, badges or build years and the states you care about; we revisit those searches daily or weekly and record price, price type and indicator for every ad. Price cuts and removed ads come out as dated events, which is what a price history is made of.

Do you offer a carsales API for listing data?

Yes. The ScrapeIt carsales API returns Network ID, title, price with its type, price indicator, odometer, dealer or private flag and state as JSON from an endpoint we host, refreshed on the schedule you set. If you prefer files, the identical rows arrive as CSV, XLSX or JSONLines, as a JSON feed or loaded into your database.

Do the prices in your data include on-road costs?

They include whatever the ad declares: a Drive away price is the on-road figure, a price marked Excl. Govt. Charges leaves government charges out, and dealers who quote drive away usually show both figures. Whether carsales prices include GST is not printed on the listing, so we do not infer it and deliver the amount with its declared type.

Is it legal to scrape carsales?

Yes. Every listing, with its price, specifications and dealer details, can be read by anyone who opens the site, no account needed. We collect only publicly available data - everything a visitor can see on carsales - and we collect it legally. Private sellers' names and phone numbers are left out by default, and personal data is handled under GDPR.
