CARFAX Scraper for Used Car Listings and History Highlights

A used car on CARFAX is listed with four history highlights and, where CARFAX grades the price, a value badge. Our CARFAX scraper turns those listings into rows; the report itself stays out.

A Managed CARFAX Collection Service

We run the collection and you receive the table. A project starts with the scope: ZIP codes and search radius, makes and models, model years, price and mileage bands, body styles, or a list of dealers whose inventory you follow. We build the crawlers for carfax.com, schedule them - daily, weekly or on demand - and repair them when the listing layout changes.

carfax.com shows its car listings to visitors in the United States and sends visitors from Europe to a different CARFAX site, so collection from US addresses, proxy rotation, pacing and CAPTCHA handling come with the service. We never log in and never open anything that has to be paid for. A free project assessment and a sample come before any commitment, and each delivery arrives with field documentation as CSV, Excel or JSON, by FTP, Dropbox or e-mail, or as a JSON feed.

What Our CARFAX Data Scraper Extracts From a Listing

A CARFAX listing is addressed by the car's VIN, so the identifier is already in the URL and every row is keyed on it. Around the dealer's asking price CARFAX prints its own reading of the car's past, and that reading is what the dataset is built around. Field groups:

  • Vehicle - VIN, stock number, year, make, model, trim, body style, exterior and interior colour, engine, transmission, drive type, fuel, MPG city and highway.
  • Price - listing price, the estimated monthly payment, the note that the price includes fees where it is shown, and mileage.
  • CARFAX Value - the badge (Great Value, Good Value, Fair Value or none), the CARFAX Value figure and the dollar gap the listing states when the car is priced below it.
  • History highlights - the four tiles: accident or damage (No Accident or Damage Reported, Accident Reported, Minor Damage, Damage Reported), ownership (CARFAX 1-Owner, 2-Owner, 3+ Owners), use (Personal Use where it is reported) and the number of service records.
  • History lines - the sentences under the tiles: when the car was purchased and the state it was owned in, where and when it was last serviced, the estimated miles driven per year.
  • Listing signals - photo count, the High Demand, Newly Listed and Price Drop labels, the manufacturer's Certified Pre-Owned mark, top features and equipment packages.
  • Dealer - name, phone, the city and state the car is offered in, and the CARFAX Lifetime Dealer label where the dealer carries it.

The value panel also says why CARFAX graded the car as it did - accident history, number of owners, service history, an open recall - and we store those reasons as separate flags. The CARFAX Vehicle History Report itself is not part of the dataset: we collect the highlights a listing prints, not the report document behind them.

What Our CARFAX Data Scraper Extracts From a Listing
CARFAX Dealer Reviews, Service Shops and Price History

CARFAX Dealer Reviews, Service Shops and Price History

Listings are the centre, and other public sections of carfax.com widen them.

  • Dealer pages - overall rating, the count of verified reviews, the star distribution, the sales phone line, opening hours and the dealer's inventory with the same history tiles. Each review has a date, a Verified Purchase, Verified Shopper or Verified Service mark and its text. Reviewers' names are left out by default.
  • Dealer directories by city - dealerships near a place with address, distance, rating, review count, Certified Pre-Owned programmes and the CARFAX Lifetime Dealer label.
  • Service shops - the auto repair directory: shop name, address, phone, rating, verified reviews, services such as Oil Change, Battery Service or Tire Service & Repair, and whether the shop is open.
  • Owner ratings - a model's rating from its owners, with separate scores for interior, exterior, performance, family and cost.

Search pages add a layer of their own: every filter shows a count, so one page tells you how many cars of a model are one-owner, accident-free or badged Great Value. Results come in pages of twenty-four cards, and we slice by ZIP code radius, year, trim and price band to keep every slice small enough to page through, then merge on VIN. Run daily, the price column becomes a CARFAX price history per car, with the day a listing appeared and the day it left. New car listings, a separate section of the site, can be collected alongside.

About CARFAX and Its Listings Site

CARFAX is known for the vehicle history report, and its used car marketplace is built on the same records. Dealers supply the cars and the prices; CARFAX adds what has been reported to it about each VIN - accidents, owners, type of use, service visits - and derives CARFAX Value, an estimate tied to that one car through its VIN, not to the model in general. A listing is graded against it: Great Value is priced well under CARFAX Value, Good Value under it, Fair Value comparable to it, and a share of listings carries no badge.

The site has a handful of working sections. Cars for Sale holds used and new cars, searched by ZIP code and radius, with landing pages by make, model, body type, price ceiling and city. Find a Dealer and Find a Service Shop are directories with verified reviews. Used Car Values and Research cover valuation and model information, and CARFAX Reports is where the report product is sold.

The marketplace is American. carfax.com shows its listings to US visitors; from Europe the same address leads to carfax.eu, which sells history reports by VIN and has no cars for sale, and Canada has a site of its own at carfax.ca. A CARFAX dataset in the sense of this page therefore means US dealer inventory.

Why Scrape CARFAX Listings

Asking prices are on every car site. What CARFAX adds is a reason for the price, printed next to it, and that changes what the data can answer.

  • Price against history. With accident, owner, use and service fields in separate columns you can measure what a reported accident or a second owner costs a model, market by market.
  • Testing the benchmark. Whether CARFAX prices are accurate for your segment is an empirical question: compare the listing price, the stated gap to CARFAX Value and how long the car stays listed.
  • Dealer intelligence. Inventory size, share of Great Value cars, Certified Pre-Owned mix, rating and review count per dealer - for lenders, vendors and dealer groups watching competitors.
  • Sourcing. One-owner, personal-use cars with long service histories and a price under CARFAX Value are what wholesale buyers look for; a daily run finds them on the day they are listed.
  • Service market mapping. Shop density, services and ratings by city, from the repair directory.

Because the VIN is in the address, CARFAX car listings join directly to your own stock, auction or registration tables.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Used In Web Scraping

How Artificial Intelligence Is Used In Web Scraping

Leveraging advances in technology, the AI-powered web scraper has skyrocketed in demand and is helping to expand capabilities by automating tedious daily tasks and speeding up data collection from thousands of websites several times over.

What is Web Scraping and What is it Used For?

What is Web Scraping and What is it Used For?

Web scraping is a method of obtaining web data by extracting it from pages of web resources with the help of a program, that is, in automatic mode. It is used to syntactically convert web pages into more usable forms.

Web Scraping for Machine Learning

If you specialize in machine learning, you need to feed large amounts of data to the algorithms. Web scraping is the easiest and the most efficient method of collecting the data from all over the Internet.

About ScrapeIt

ScrapeIt is a web scraping agency that works as a service: you set the scope, we build, run and maintain the crawlers and deliver the result. On CARFAX the history columns matter as much as the price, so every tile and every history line is kept as a field of its own.

Dealers and repair shops are businesses and are collected as published. Reviewers are private people, so their names stay out by default, and anything personal is treated as GDPR requires.

FAQ

Do you offer a CARFAX API for listing data?

Yes. The ScrapeIt CARFAX API returns VIN, listing price, mileage, the CARFAX Value badge, the accident, owner, use and service highlights and the dealer as JSON from an endpoint we host, refreshed on the schedule you set. The same data also comes as CSV or XLSX files, a JSON feed or straight into your database.

Is it legal to scrape CARFAX?

Yes. Used car listings, dealer pages with their reviews and the service shop directory are published on carfax.com for anyone to read. We collect only publicly available data - everything a visitor can see on CARFAX - and we collect it legally. We do not sign in, and paid content is outside the scope.

What is in a CARFAX dataset, and is the history report included?

The dataset holds what a listing shows: VIN, price, mileage, specification, the value badge and the four history highlights with their detail lines, plus the dealer. The CARFAX Vehicle History Report itself is not included: we collect what the listing prints and nothing that has to be bought. The highlights are already structured - accident yes or no, owner count, use type, number of service records - which is the form a pricing model needs.

Can you cover CARFAX listings for the whole United States?

Yes. Make and model pages list cars from the whole country and search narrows them by ZIP code and radius, so national coverage is assembled from slices - make, model, year, price band, ZIP radius - with duplicates removed on VIN. Each row keeps the dealer's city and state, which makes regional comparison a filter instead of a second project.

How often do CARFAX listings and prices need refreshing?

Daily for pricing work. Dealers reprice cars, the Newly Listed and Price Drop labels mark fresh arrivals and cuts, and a sold car simply drops out of the results, so listing date, price changes and days on site can only be derived from repeated runs. For a one-time market study a single extract is enough.

How does it Work?
